SeltzertopiaLive! at the Wanaque Reserve

Sunday night I traveled deep into New Jersey to speak at the Milk and Honey club at the Wanaque Reserve, a 55+ community (they said I could move there in a few years). It was a wonderful group, with over 100+ in attendance. But my usual joke couldn’t work – “I’d like to thank everyone who came tonight who are under 50 – I appreciate that you both came.” I tried aging it up to 60!

I suspect “Seltzerology” above was a typo, but I kinda like it. I am a Seltzerologist. I study seltzer! I think I might use that…

These are the cups ready for the egg creams. Ubets chocolate first, then milk mixed in. That can sit for awhile then get rapidly filled with seltzer when the crowd arrived after my talk.
This is me with Bella. She grabbed me before my talk. She said, “I have never had an egg cream before. Guess where I’m from?” Based on her accent, I said, “Austria”. She said, “No. Poland.” It was all very playful and friendly. Before I could say another word, after a beat, she added, “I came to the US in the late 40s, after Auschwitz.” That’s when I froze. And then, I DID NOT SAY what I was thinking, which was “What, they didn’t serve egg creams in Auschwitz?” It would have fit the jokey rapport we’d created, but would NOT HAVE BEEN APPROPRIATE. This photo is us together after my talk, once she had in her hands her first egg cream.

It was a great night, and they couldn’t have been warmer or more welcoming.

Check out this awesome thank you card I received a few days after the event!
